- What is Crystal?
Crystal is glass with lead monoxide added. To be full lead or Austrian Crystal, a minimum of 24% lead is required (Our crystal prisms are minimum 27%). The lead monoxide gives crystal its' optical clarity and brilliance.
- Is this acid etched?
No, the hobby acid etching is very slow and does little more than frost the surface. The industrial acids are difficult to use and dangerous.
- What does "Airbrush Gold" mean and does it cost extra?
Darlene airbrushes gold paint into the design she carves in the crystal or glass. Many glass artists use a "hobby" product (Rub N Buff) to get a similar effect. Because Air Brushing produces a rich elegant look and a superior finish, Darlene has chosen to spend the extra time and effort to Air Brush her work. $9.99 extra on glassware, crystals, and jewelry.
- What is sand carving?
Also known as sand blasting, a technique using compressed air and abrasive media to remove part of the crystal or glass to form the image being created. Sand is a bit of a misnomer since sand is seldom used on glass and crystal. Most sand carving artists use aluminum oxide or silicon carbide.
- How long have you been doing this?
Darlene has worked with glass since 1992. She began doing lamp work beads,
fusing and slumping glass. In 1999 she discovered glass etching and did the
traditional glassware, mirrors, window and doors. In 2001 she was invited to a
dog show, was well received and concentrated on dogs since.
